Miss America History
"Miss America represents the highest ideals. She is a real combination of beauty, grace, and intelligence, artistic and refined. She is a type which the American Girl might well emulate."
Those words were spoken by Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce President Frederick Hickman more than 75 years ago, and they still ring true today. Miss America is a role model to young and old alike, and a spokesperson, using her title to educate millions of Americans on an issue of importance to herself and society at large.
Over the years, Miss America has been intent on making a difference in people's lives through her charitable and community endeavors. Jean Bartel, Miss America 1943, went so far as to use her celebrity in the war effort. She was credited with selling more Series E war bonds than anyone else in the United States - $2.5 million worth of them. While Kate Shindle, Miss America 1998, spent her year of service addressing groups and meeting with federal, state and local public officials on behalf of the HIV/AIDS cause. She even presided over sessions regarding women and AIDS at the 12th World AIDS Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Today, Miss America travels approximately 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours. She tours the nation reaching out to support her ideals, committed to helping others. Miss America is more than just a title. She is a woman who reflects a tradition of style, sophistication and service.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.
This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well.

Crystal Cattle finds a wedding dress

The big day is getting closer.

This past weekend my sister, my friend Dana, my mom and my future MIL all headed to Chicago for the search for a great white dress. And I found it!

Before the weekend I had actually not tried on any dresses, so I was pretty excited to start the adventure. The day started out with me trying on a dress I has saw on the TV show Say Yes to the Dress - I watch the show all the time. Well it turns out that the very first dress I tried on! I still kept all my appointments that day, but in the end we headed back to that same store and I bought that wonderful dress.

I loved in Mira Couture how all their dresses were displayed.

Jenny Yoo was another great store with awesome dresses.

I am pretty sure it was meant to be because when I was trying on the dress for the final time I told my consultant that that I had saw the dress on the show, and that's when she told me she used to work at Kleinfeld's and knows all the people on the show!

I thought all this dress fabric was beautiful.

Now, no one will be seeing the dress until the big day. The Boy wants it to be a surprise until I walk down the aisle. We'll also be waiting to do our photos until after the ceremony! Therefore you will all be kept in suspense until April 7! However, I will tell you the dress came from Ultimate Bride and they were awesome.

Chicago Skyline

Going once, going twice, sold for $17,500

It's a cattle sale.

On Friday, I jumped in my car and headed south to a cattle sale. Sales are one of my favorite things to go to. There are lots of friends to be seen, good cattle and the excitement of the sale. Plus, you got to look good!

This was my going to a cattle sale outfit. I love this new scarf from Southern Jewlz, I'm wearing a Banana Republic collared shirt, jeans, and a combination of MAC and Mary Kay make-up. I have more pictures posted of the accessories on my facebook page.

Now this sale was different than the cattle sales that happen everyday at your local auction barn or market. Eby Ranch has purebred cattle, just like a purebred dog. Their cattle have a registration paper and are worth more money because we use purebred cattle for breeding stock.

The sale was called the Friday Night Lights sale, and they sold Angus and Simmental cattle. The two heifers (girls) above are February babies.

The also sold a bunch of cows with their babies. Aren't these guys cute!

This sale was a little unique as they didn't bring the cattle into a ring to be sold. Instead the cattle stayed outside and they showed videos of the cattle as they were being sold.

At this sale people could call in their bid, bid in person and even bid over the Internet.

One heifer even sold for $17,500! She was definitely the exception and the whole sale averaged just over $3,000. A lot of money, but raising purebred cattle isn't cheap. Not only is there the day to day cost of feed, land, employees, but there are also extra costs for marketing and registering the cattle.

Here is a video of the $17,500 heifer selling. At first the "block man" gives a spiel about how good she is, and then the auctioneer starts. Towards the end of the video the ringman (person taking bids) is taking bids from two different people that are in the same area.
